Star Scout

dark goes dim goes light
up, go up
eat swim-bug, down go look
up, up, jump-fly, catch bug!
go shore
wriggle wiggle worm? why here?
bite
stab!
flying! why flying? air!
can’t breathe, where?
so cold so dry

Today I learned to clean a trout
on Rainbow Lake in the Montana
air. Today we fileted it and
cooked the sweet meat in a tin can
under Bisquick, a camper’s meal
made of convenience, need, hunger,
and generosity unwilled. We ate
fish sitting around a pine fire,
careful only to take logs which
had fallen and to kill no tree.

I got a merit badge for it.
